India: senior officials rebel against central power

In India, more and more senior officials are speaking out against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Latest episode to date: a revolt against new laws in the Laccadivia archipelago.

This follows several slingshots by officials against the decisions of the ruling BJP party.

They are 93 former officials to have written to Narendra Modi this Saturday.

Their fear?

That new laws on the development of the Laccadive Islands lead to a proliferation of seaside resorts on the seafront of this virgin marine territory.

The signatories fear a disfigurement of the archipelago with the development of alcohol outlets.

This petition is only the latest episode of growing opposition between central power and senior officials in India.

In May, 60 of them wrote to the Prime Minister to demand an end to the redevelopment project of Parliament in New Delhi.

In the midst of the second wave of the pandemic, this titanic and expensive project evokes “Nero playing the violin while Rome is on fire”, we can read in the letter.

The government has forced former civil servants not to comment on political issues or their pensions will be canceled.

In Bengal, a secretary of state was dismissed after refusing to meet Narendra Modi.

So many elements that contribute to the feeling of being a pawn in the service of the central power for these servants of the State.
