The question in recent days has been who of the CDU or the AfD will come first in

the regional election in Saxony-Anhalt

.

The first estimates point to an unexpected victory for the Christian Democratic Party over the far-right Alternative for Germany: between 35 and 36% of the vote, against 22.5 to 23.5%.

In Berlin too, the time has come for relief, as this ballot was the last before the federal elections in September which will mark the end of Angela Merkel's 16-year reign.

“

This is a sensational result

,” said CDU Secretary General Paul Ziemiak.

This victory is also very good news for Armin Laschet, who aspires to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel after the federal elections next September.

Elected narrowly at the head of the CDU

last January against the popular Markus Söder, Armin Laschet needed success to strengthen his position.

comment from a German colleague "who would have thought that the coming to power of Armin Laschet would have been announced in Saxony-Anhalt?"

This election, however, leaves a bitter taste to the left.

The SPD and Die Linke both suffered failures, while the Greens made a smaller breakthrough than expected.

Reiner Haseloff has clearly ruled out alliances with the far right, although some members of his party have flirted with the idea in recent years.

Since 2016, he has led an unprecedented coalition in the country, with the Greens and the Social Democrats of the SPD.

He could renew it, or consider another configuration with the liberals of the FDP, who will return to the regional parliament.
