- I could not describe my feelings.

This is the first passport I have had in my life, says Abdulla Jaradeh who came to Sweden from Palestine in 2015.

He is one of 80,000 people who became Swedish citizens last year, which is an increase of 25 percent since 2019. This according to figures from Statistics Sweden (SCB) compiled by the news agency Siren.

The number is the largest in 20 years, which is partly due to changes in the law for Norwegians who are now allowed dual citizenship.

The largest group that officially became Swedes last year were people from Syria.

Halland received a total addition of 2,332 new citizens and Halmstad is the municipality that received the most, followed by Falkenberg and Varberg.
