Member of the Federal National Council, Obaid Khalfan Al-Ghoul Al-Salami, informed «Emirates Today» that he will present an integrated plan to localize the medicine sector of micro and rare specialties to the government, on the sidelines of a parliamentary question directed to the Minister of Health and Community Protection, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, Abdul Rahman Al Owais, in The council’s session scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, is about “guiding citizen doctors to study delicate and rare medical specialties.”

He confirmed to "Emirates Today" that there is a dearth of citizen doctors with delicate medical specialties, pointing out that his question aims to shed light on the role of the ministry in directing doctors to study rare medical specialties, and work to increase the citizen medical staff in these specialties, to ensure that the growing needs are met. for the health sector in the country.

Al-Salami said: “Despite the development that the state has witnessed during the past fifty years in the quality of health facilities and facilities and the level of services provided to patients, this development has not been accompanied by an unparalleled development in the field of medical training for the citizen cadre, as the state still depends on resident and visiting doctors in many Of the delicate and rare medical specialties,” stressing that the traditional idea that prevailed for a period of time to appoint a general physician to treat all diseases is no longer applicable due to population growth, geographical expansion, and chronic and incurable diseases that drain energies and capabilities.

He added: “We have noticed that many national doctors have resorted to studying common specialties such as dermatology and family medicine, while the health sector in the country suffers from a severe shortage in many delicate medical specialties such as neurosurgery, cardiovascular, reconstructive plastic surgeries, jaw, head, retina, neurosurgery, ear and preterm pediatrics. Pediatrics, anesthesia, emergencies, and many other specialties in which the number of national doctors is few, which necessitates those in charge of the health sector to plan to guide young citizens and encourage them to continue their educational path in the delicate and rare specialties.”

Al-Salami pointed out that the absence of the Emirati board constitutes an obstacle for graduates of medical colleges in the country, especially those who are unable to travel to study abroad, pointing to the need to expedite the establishment of the board as it has become an urgent requirement to encourage national doctors to study delicate and rare specialties.

He said: "We must not lose sight of the necessity of activating the UAE National Center for Health Specialties (Emirati Board for Health Specialties), which is an integrated project to establish and establish a national center for health specialties specialized in developing specialized curricula, supervising specialized clinical training programs in the country, and setting quality standards. To accredit educational hospitals, medical centers and institutions working in the field of specialized clinical training and education programs, to ensure the highest level of clinical specialized training courses, in accordance with international standards, which enables the center to issue clinical professional diploma certificates, medical residency program completion certificates, and clinical specialty certificates. And high-quality clinical fellowships in accordance with internationally approved standards.”

With regard to the main reasons for the reluctance of citizens to enroll in the medicine of delicate and rare specialties, Al-Salami stressed that the limited salary compared to the effort expended may play a role in increasing this reluctance, especially that the doctor’s salary is close to the salaries of many employees in other less dangerous and effortless jobs.

He said: “This matter must be reconsidered, because doctors are working under great pressure from responsibility and risk factors that may affect their physical and psychological safety, and the best example of this is what the first line of defense suffered during the Corona pandemic from psychological pressure in dealing with cases and fear of infection.” And from passing it on to the parents, which necessitates us to find a mechanism to raise material and moral support for this vital group of society.”
