One week before the second round of the presidential election in Peru, the two running candidates, Keiko Fujimori of the populist right and Pedro Castillo of the radical left, clashed Sunday evening in a final televised debate before the election of next Sunday.

An evening marked by the absence of detailed proposals and by personal attacks, like the electoral campaign.

Candidate

Keiko Fujimori

was the first to attack her opponent, the teacher and trade unionist

Pedro Castillo

, whom she accuses since the start of the campaign of wanting to make Peru a second Venezuela. "

Our patients cannot be treated with communism, the Covid cannot be fought with the class struggle, the pandemic cannot be fought with stones

", launched the candidate for the populist right on Sunday, May 30.

For his part, the candidate of the radical left took advantage of a question from the moderators concerning the fight against corruption to recall the accusations against his rival and his Fuerza Popular party.

"

Doesn't it seem to you that corruption is synonymous with Fujimorism?"

I would like my opponent to tell us when she expects to return the millions stolen in corruption?

Shoulder to shoulder

Keiko Fujimori, whose father and former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) is in prison notably for corruption, is in fact herself accused of money laundering, criminal organization and obstruction of justice.

Charges for which she faces 30 years in prison.

Beyond personal attacks, the two candidates each presented a range of proposals, without however specifying how they intended to finance them.

At the end of the three hours of debate, many Internet users deplored the poor performance and the lack of consistency of the two candidates, one of the objectives of which was to convince the undecided while the latest polls give them almost equal.
