The social media giant in the sights of the European Union.

The European Commission on Friday opened an investigation against Facebook to determine whether the group violated EU competition rules in the use of advertising data.

Brussels wants to establish whether the group has used advertising data, in particular collected from advertisers on its platforms, in order to compete with them in markets where Facebook is present.

The Commission is also investigating whether its online ad service "Facebook Marketplace" is linked to its social network in violation of European rules.
