The Bilbao City Council
has prevented the celebration in the municipal building of La Bolsa of a talk in tribute to
Txabi Etxebarrieta from ETA
. The Consistory chaired by
Juan Mari Aburto (PNV)
informed the organizers today that they could not use the municipal facility despite the fact that
the National Court had dismissed a complaint
from
Dignity and Justice
in which it asked the judges to prevent the holding of a act centered on
one of the founders of ETA
who, in addition, perpetrated
the gang's first crime by shooting point-blank
at the civil guard
José Antonio Pardines
on June 7, 1968.
The associations "Etxebarrieta Memoria Elkartea" (Association in Memory of Etxebarrieta) and "Egiari Zor Fundazioa" had announced the celebration of several acts of remembrance and tribute to Txabi Etxebarrieta from ETA on Monday, June 7, 53 years after the death of one of the founders of ETA. Etxebarrieta was the gunman who murdered the civil guard José Antonio Pardines when he was
regulating traffic at the NI
in Aduna (Guipúzcoa). The Civil Guard agent suspected the vehicle, a SEAT 850, in which Etxebarrieta and
Iñaki Sarasketa were
traveling
. When Pardines asked for the documentation of the two ETA members, Etxebarrieta shot him, leaving him wounded, and then finished him off with four more shots.
Etxebarrieta and Sarasketa were arrested in Tolosa, minutes later, but
Etxebarrieta died in a struggle with Civil Guard agents
while Sarasketa managed to flee at first but was intercepted hours later in Regil.
The ETA member was going to be honored with three acts scheduled for this weekend but the
PP of Bilbao and Covite, Dignity and Justice and the Villacisneros Foundation
had already denounced that these acts constituted an affront to the victims.
Daniel Portero de Dignidad y Justicia had demanded the suspension of the act to the National High Court but
Judge José Luis Calama
has refused to prohibit the planned acts, stating that there is no "evidence whatsoever that allows affirming that any crime has occurred or will occur ".
"It must be the competent government authority, in this case
the security forces and bodies, who must decide whether the condemnation denounced
conforms to the regulations for its celebration," he said in the order issued this morning when the City Council had not yet made public a decision that had been adopted last Thursday after analyzing the call and the reservation made of the space where the talk was going to take place.
The organizers of the talk, of a
public act in the Plaza Unamuno in Bilbao
and of a
wreath at the grave
where the remains of the ETA lie in the Derio cemetery have announced their suspension this afternoon.
Instead, on Sunday, the organizers will hold a press conference in Bilbao.
"The victims who have suffered state violence continue to be discriminated against. We are denied the right to memory. We are denied the right to make public the truth about the deaths of our relatives," they have made public.
