Facebook announced on Friday night that Donald Trump will be suspended from Facebook and Instagram at least until January 7, 2023. At the end of that period, the security risks for the public will be evaluated, Facebook top Nick Clegg states in a blog post.

Trump has previously been completely banned from Twitter.

Being ported from social media has affected Trump negatively, says Dag Blanck, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University.

- He used social media extremely effectively as president, they have played a big role in his communication opportunities.

For him, it has been very negative to be deprived of them.

Through social media, not least Twitter, he has had the opportunity to get in direct contact with millions of Americans and has been able to bypass the traditional media, he says.

At the same time, Dag Blanck does not think that it will affect Trump's most loyal supporters very much that he will now continue to be suspended.

- The interesting thing is that even though he has had difficulty communicating via Twitter and Facebook, he still has a very strong grip on his voters, he says.

Why is Facebook shutting down Trump for so long in the future?

- They have a set of rules where they have previously let politicians say more that has been considered to have a news value. But now they have tightened those regulations and the news value plays less of a role. They believe that what he has said calls for violence, that he violates a number of constitutional tricks, spreads obvious lies and has incited a revolt against the United States.
