UAE briefing on its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council

Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemi, and Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Cultural and Public Diplomacy, Omar Saif Ghobash, gave a briefing to the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States at the United Nations (GRULAC), to provide an overview of the UAE’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Council Security for the period 2022-2023, and during the virtual meeting, the historical relations of the UAE with Latin American and Caribbean countries were reviewed.

Al-Hashemi stressed that the UAE will seek to represent all member states by listening to their views and reflecting their interests, during membership in the Security Council, noting that peace and security can be enhanced when the international community is united.

For his part, Omar Ghobash said: “Since the founding of the UAE in 1971, the geographical distance between it and the members of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States has not prevented it from seeking to deepen political relations and enhance economic cooperation.

The UAE is also proud of its partnership with Latin American and Caribbean countries in development and humanitarian activities, the latest of which was in the field of personal protective equipment supplies to combat (Covid-19).

The briefing touched on the priorities of the UAE in its campaign "Stronger with our union" for membership in the Security Council, including its four pillars: ensuring peace, promoting inclusiveness, building resilience, and stimulating innovation.
