The new information appears in a secret investigation with the code name "Operation Dunhammer" within the Danish Armed Forces Intelligence Service (FE).

The inquiry has analyzed the NSA's surveillance from Denmark during the years 2012 and 2014.

The disclosure is based on information from nine different sources, all of whom had access to classified information from the Danish intelligence service.

All information is confirmed by several independent sources.

The majority of the sources confirm to Danmarks Radio that named Swedish politicians and senior officials were a target for espionage.

Sources: Spied on Swedish politicians

SVT Nyheter has via Danmarks Radio asked the sources about the Swedish surveillance.

One of the sources says:

- I gained insight into the fact that the NSA, through its collaboration with FE, spied on Swedish business interests and named Swedish politicians.

Another source says that it is about "politicians in areas that intelligence services are normally interested in".

It has not been possible, via the sources, to get an answer as to how many Swedish politicians or officials there are or their names.

Exactly who was tapped when we do not know.

Significantly more comprehensive

Details from the secret investigation became known only last year - when SVT and Danmarks Radio revealed that the NSA had carried out espionage against the Swedish defense industry and the military aircraft manufacturer Saab.

The new information shows that the extent of the spy scandal against Sweden is much more extensive.

The review shows that the US intelligence service NSA has not only, with Danish help, spied on Swedish leading politicians.

They have also spied on top politicians and high-ranking officials in Germany, France and Norway.

Denmark: Systematic eavesdropping "unacceptable"

SVT has applied to the NSA and the Danish intelligence service for an interview without results.

The Danish Minister of Defense writes in a statement that the Danish government can not speculate on media information but adds that systematic eavesdropping on close allies is "unacceptable".

The revelation of "Operation Dunhammer" has been led by Danmarks Radio and is a collaboration between newsrooms on SVT, NRK, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Le Monde, WDR, NDR.
