Most of the Swedish soldiers currently serving abroad are stationed in Mali.

Sweden has about 400 people stationed in three international operations in Mali.

One of them is the international special forces force "Task force Takuba".

The mission is led by French forces and is risky.

Colonel Claes Ivgren at the Swedish Armed Forces' headquarters tells Ekot that the purpose of the Swedish blood center is to ensure access to blood and blood products for the international units that are in a risky environment.

Should there be a large and urgent need for blood from the Swedish forces on site, the Armed Forces has its own capacity to fly the blood down to Mali, according to Ivgren.

Can fly the blood to Mali

In Mali, crime and drug and drug trafficking are high.

The country has also become a stronghold for pro-violence Islamist groups linked to IS and Al-Quaida.

In April, three soldiers in the Swedish special forces unit in Mali were slightly injured when they hit a roadside bomb in the eastern part of the country.

Soldiers in the Home Guard are urged to donate blood to the Swedish warehouse.

-The blood is needed in connection with major trauma surgery or emergency intervention in case of serious injury, says Colonel Claes Ivgren to Ekot.
