Corona virus sweeps overcrowded Thai prisons

A wave of "Covid-19" infections sweeping Thailand's cells has shed light on the problem of overcrowded prisons in the kingdom, where the space available for some inmates to sleep does not exceed the space of a coffin.

Until yesterday, 25,000 people had been infected in different prisons, as prisoners who lived next to each other were encouraged to wear masks even while they were sleeping.

The authorities have proposed plans for early release of prisoners with pre-existing illnesses and have announced funding for more examinations and medical care in recent days.

But prisoners behind bars say they were not aware of the severity of the outbreak.
