Belgium's ambassador to South Korea will leave his post in the coming weeks, after his wife assaulted an employee in a clothing store, in an incident widely reported on social media.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement today that Minister Sophie Wilms decided to end the mandate of Ambassador Peter Liquoy this summer, after three years in office.

A clip recorded by security cameras showed the ambassador's wife, Chiang Xueqiu, as she slapped a female supermarket worker in the South Korean capital, Seoul, who was trying to prevent her from hitting her colleague on April 9.

The colleague suspected that the ambassador's wife was trying to leave the store with a piece of clothing that she had not paid for.

The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Chiang had met with the employee to apologize to her for her "unacceptable behavior", and cooperated with the police, adding that her diplomatic immunity had been lifted at the request of the South Korean police.

The Belgian Foreign Ministry said that Liquoy served his country sincerely, and supervised a successful official visit in 2019. "But it has become clear that the current situation does not allow him to continue to play his role."
