This Thursday, a Spanish national was heavily condemned by the criminal court of Lille, in the North.

He had been arrested a few days earlier by customs not far from the Franco-Belgian border with a load of narcotics hidden inside his vehicle.

Customs officers from the Halluin-Reckem brigade were carrying out checks on the A22 motorway on Tuesday when they spotted a car registered in Spain arriving from Belgium.

The officials intercepted the vehicle and escorted it to the Roncq area, near Tourcoing, to carry out the check.

Firm prison and very high fine

It is the dog specializing in the detection of narcotics who allowed customs officials to discover suspicious packages, hidden behind the panels of the interior of the vehicle. In total, the officials extracted 46 packages from their hiding place. Weighing nearly 47 kg, the product turned out to be amphetamine paste. According to the Lille prosecutor's office, the market value of the seizure is estimated at 703,000 euros.

The driver of the vehicle, a 43-year-old Spanish national, was arrested and taken into police custody.

Brought before the prosecution, he was then tried in immediate appearance, this Thursday, by the Lille criminal court.

The man was sentenced to three years in prison, including a one-year suspended sentence, with a warrant of committal.

He will also have to pay a customs fine corresponding to the estimated price of his goods, i.e. 703,500 euros.
