On Sunday 23 May, an airliner of the airline Ryanair, connecting the cities of Athens and Vilnius, was hijacked by a fighter plane towards Minsk, capital of Belarus - under the pretext of a bomb threat.

On board, the Belarusian journalist Roman Protassevich, opponent of the regime of Alexander Lukashenko (and described as a terrorist by the latter), was arrested.

While Russia supports its Belarusian ally, Europe immediately reacted by closing its airspace to Belarus as a sanction and, along with the United States, demanded an urgent investigation from the International Civil Aviation Organization.
