Right now it is high season for fisheries supervision along the Norrbotten coast.

On Wednesday, the county administrative board seized nets in six different places.

The total network length went up to 1.5 kilometers.

A large proportion of the nets were extra long and deep, equipped with large meshes intended for salmon fishing.

Large stitches in the net

- This is without a doubt a targeted fishing for salmon and large sea trout.

The nets were between four and five meters deep with large meshes and the single longest net was almost 300 meters long and so no seine nets look like, says Dan Blomkvist, county fishing consultant at the county administrative board in a press release.

The nets that are usually seized are adapted for fishing for whitefish but laid out in such a way that even smaller sea trout are caught.

But that was not the case this time.

Net-caught fish are severely damaged

According to the county administrative board, the nets do not contain whitefish, but two large salmon.

The salmon were released and put back into the water.

But they will find it difficult to survive.

- Fish caught on nets are often severely damaged and are therefore rarely possible to release.

These large and early migratory salmon are important breeding fish for the salmon stocks, but it is unfortunately not likely that these individuals will survive until spawning despite being re-released, says Blomkvist.
