China News Service, Beijing, May 27 (Reporter Wang Kai) In the early years, Marshal He Long’s daughter, He Jiesheng, wrote an article recalling Marshal Xu Xiangqian, in which the word "fate and suffering" was used to describe the life of this old marshal.

Someone may ask, how could Xu Xiangqian, who was ranked among the top ten founding marshals and held many important positions, "failed"?

Looking back on Xu Xiangqian's life, there were indeed many ups and downs.

When he was young, his body was thin and his face was melancholy. He was said to have had a "distressed look". When he applied for the Whampoa Military Academy, he was almost turned away because of his appearance.

This has not concealed his talents. His outstanding military strategy and commanding ability appeared in the revolutionary struggle, which not only made Hu Zongnan, Du Yuming, Song Xilian and other "Huangpu classmates" eclipse, but also made Chiang Kai-shek regret "seeing away".

In 1936, the Red Army marching west went deep into the Qilian Mountains and the Hexi Corridor. It was surrounded by a well-equipped "Majia Army" with a force several times that of mine, intercepted and strangled frantically.

After 4 months of fighting, although the West Route Army led by Xu Xiangqian inflicted heavy damage on the enemy, it ran out of ammunition and almost all the army was wiped out.

In April 1937, Xu Xiangqian escaped to find the center.

Geng Biao, who responded to him, later recalled that when he saw Xu Xiangqian who was in trouble, he felt that he was 20 years older than his actual age!

Mao Zedong saw Xu Qiangqiang and comforted him: staying with the green hills, not afraid of not having firewood.

Although there was the comfort of revolutionary comrades, and despite numerous victories in the subsequent revolutionary wars, the sacrifice and blood of the West Route Army was still the pain of Xu Xiangqian's life.

According to the memory of his son-in-law Zhang Yuansheng, the marshal's will stated that he would scatter his ashes on Dabie Mountain, Daba Mountain, Taihang Mountain... in this way to accompany his former comrades-in-arms.

During the War of Liberation, Xu Xiangqian had been plagued by new and old diseases.

During the Taiyuan battle, he continued to work with illness, and refused to return to the rear for training and treatment. He did not release relevant duties to treat the illness until the victory of the battle was over and Taiyuan was liberated.

During the Cultural Revolution, Xu Xiangqian was polluted by Jiang Qing and others as a member of the "February Countercurrent". He was wrongly criticized and sent to the vehicle factory for "labor study".

In such a predicament, he did not complain or complain. Together with Nie Rongzhen and Ye Jianying, he seized every opportunity to contribute to the people's army and foreign work.

It is precisely because of these dilemmas and hard work that Xu Xiangqian has been able to face all challenges with the calmness and resilience when he is "suffering from the sky".

Even if his fate is ill-fated, even if he is "wronged", he still maintains his original aspirations as a Communist.

Even if it is called "a high position" after suffering all the hardships, even if some people around him say that it is time to "enjoy the blessing", Xu Xiangqian never seeks benefits for himself and his family.

When his daughter was married, he only gave a pen as a "dowry"; in front of his sisters, he also said that there was nothing to give to them, because they were all public; his son could only go to school by taking the bus by himself, and he wanted to "snap" his private car from the door. nor……

In the eyes of others, Xu Xiangqian may be too "painful" for himself, but in the eyes of such an older generation of proletarian revolutionaries, compared with sacrificed comrades in arms, he can survive the rain of bullets and see the founding and rapid development of New China. Lucky enough.

He does not regard his own "bitterness" as bitterness and does not compare with the "sweetness" of others. Xu Xiangqian is worthy of his reputation as a "Marshal in Commoner", and he has also set an example for latecomers: in the eyes of a qualified Communist Party member, he can serve the people wholeheartedly. Seeing that their own efforts can bring well-being to the people, this is the greatest "sweetness" they pursue.
