May 26, 2021 It will be a little bigger and a little brighter than usual: a SuperLuna, in fact. The spectacle occurs when the Moon is full and is at the closest point in its orbit to Earth. Today evening will be a great time to admire our natural satellite.

What will be seen

The moon will rise in the east just after sunset and will remain in the sky until dawn. It will be about 357,000 kilometers from us, much less than the average distance, which is about 384,000 kilometers. As a result it will appear 14% larger and up to 30% brighter.

Send us your photos

It will be the right occasion to look out the window and take a picture of her. If you post it on Twitter with the hashtag # Futuro24, that is the RaiNews24 column dedicated to science, we will insert your image in a photo gallery reserved for the shots of our readers.

Protagonist also on the internet

Many online initiatives will also be dedicated to the SuperLuna. The National Institute of Astrophysics, for example, will organize a direct observation from 9.30 pm on the YouTube channel of EduInaf, its educational and dissemination magazine. Inside there are connections with various astronomical observatories throughout Italy.

Eclipse over the Pacific

Even more fortunate are the inhabitants of the Pacific area, from Western America to Eastern Asia: for them not only SuperLuna, but also total eclipse of the Moon between 11.44 and 14.52 Italian time. A very rare event.
