In Stockholm and Sörmland, among other places, the number of confirmed cases has decreased by around 40 percent in the past week.

A sharp decrease is also seen in Skåne and Uppsala, and the decrease is also clear in Örebro and Västra Götaland.

- The number found to be infected with covid-19 last week was almost 40 percent lower than the week before.

I hope that this will also be reflected in the healthcare needs of patients with covid-19, says Johan Bratt, acting director of health and medical care in a statement.

Tegnell: "Similar to the development last year"

According to state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, the development in the regions follows what the Swedish Public Health Agency presented as Scenario 0 at the beginning of May - that the spread of infection would decrease sharply from the beginning of May and level off in July.

- This is similar to what we saw last year.

Then we had a peak in mid-April, and the spread of infection then decreased faster and faster and then remained at a low level during the summer, says Anders Tegnell to SVT Nyheter.

Sees three causes

Warmer weather that makes it easier to be outdoors, that more and more people are being vaccinated and that restrictions remain in place are three main reasons for the reduced spread of infection, according to Tegnell, who believes that the reduction in new cases will continue in the coming weeks.

- If we do not change our lifestyles too quickly, I believe that development will continue in the same way.

We have had a positive trend in many places for four to five weeks, but you should not take it for granted, advice and recommendations are still important, he says.

Continued unrest in Norrbotten

And the development is not positive in all regions.

In Norrbotten, for example, the infection decreases in nine municipalities, but the incidence in the county is still 98 percent higher than the national average.

- In Norrbotten, the situation remains serious, says Anders Tegnell.
