The former Secretary of State, Georges Tron, sentenced to five years in prison for rape and sexual assault, has resigned from his mandate as mayor of Draveil in Essonne, announced the first deputy Richard Privat.

A resignation appreciated by the opposition, which "comes to clarify the situation" for the latter.

Former Secretary of State Georges Tron, imprisoned since his conviction on appeal for rape and sexual assault in February, has resigned from his mandate as mayor of Draveil in Essonne, First Deputy Richard Privat told AFP . LR mayor for 25 years of this city where he was re-elected by more than 64% in the municipal elections in 2020, the former Secretary of State (2010-2011) led Draveil, despite his conviction, provoking the anger of elected officials opposition and feminist associations.

"I confirm the resignation of Georges Tron from his mandate as mayor," Richard Privat told AFP.

After a ten-year judicial soap opera and an acquittal at first instance, Georges Tron was sentenced on appeal in February to five years in prison, three of which were closed for rape and sexual assault on a former city hall employee, along with six years of ineligibility.

He appealed to the Supreme Court.

"A good thing for democracy"

But several months after this conviction, the opposition and feminist associations criticized his "omnipresence" at the head of the town hall, with which he is in "daily" contact. On May 12, government spokesman Gabriel Attal said the government was working on "the conditions" for the dismissal of Georges Tron. For François Guignard, the leader of the opposition, this resignation is "a good thing for democracy, citizens expect their elected representatives to set an example," he told AFP.

"Bravo to those who tirelessly fought for his dismissal," added François Damerval, another elected opposition member. "The resignation of Georges Tron is a logical decision. It clarifies a situation which had become complicated particularly for the inhabitants of Draveil and difficult to bear by the victims", also estimated the president LR of the department of Essonne, François Durovray on Twitter.
