“We, the Foreign Ministers of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States, want to make it clear that the presidential elections in Syria on May 26 will not be free or fair,” the statement said.

As noted, the foreign ministers condemn the decision of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to hold presidential elections.

“We call on the international community to unconditionally reject the Assad regime’s attempt to secure legitimacy without stopping serious human rights violations and meaningful participation in the political process launched by the UN in order to stop the conflict,” the statement said.

Earlier, the head of the Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky said that the State Duma had received an invitation from the People's Council of Syria to send observers to the presidential elections in the SAR.

The Russian Foreign Ministry commented on preparations for the presidential elections in Syria.
