The A40 motorway was extremely disturbed on Tuesday morning after a truck fire, around 5.15 am, under the Chamoise tunnel (Ain).

The tractor of a heavy goods vehicle transporting non-hazardous materials has indeed, for an unknown reason, caught fire while it was traveling under this tunnel, in the Mâcon-Geneva direction.

The truck driver quickly alerted the emergency services, and the smoke extraction mechanisms were activated by the services of the operator APRR.

About 45 firefighters from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) of Ain were dispatched to the site, and were able to extinguish the fire around 7 a.m.

Traffic was immediately interrupted in the two Chamoise tubes, in both directions.

As the Ain prefecture indicates, four people were present under the tunnel when the fire started.

They were able to gain access to the tunnel safety galleries by their own means and then be taken over by the SDIS of Ain.

A return to normal expected during the day

Only the driver of the accident truck was "slightly injured" after inhaling fumes.

Traffic is still disrupted, especially around Saint-Martin-du-Fresne (Ain), in the direction Bourg-en-Bresse - Geneva and bypasses have been put in place.

The A40 is thus cut between Bourg-en-Bresse and Annemasse, in the direction of Geneva, and users of the Lyon region (but also of the A6 and A39), heading towards Geneva or the Haute-Savoie, to avoid this sector.

The prefecture evokes a return to normal, in both directions, on Tuesday.
