The
United States
Government
has approved an arms contract for the sale to Spain of parts and maintenance of
MQ-9A drones
, known as
"Reaper"
, worth almost 90 million euros (110 million dollars).
It is a logistics contract requested by the Government of Spain that includes the
sale of components
,
spare parts
and
accessories
for drones,
repair
and return services,
software
and
simulators
, as well as training of personnel and training equipment, among others.
The manufacturer is
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems
, a company based in Palmdale, California.
The contract is now pending the approval of Congress, which has already been notified by the Government.
In its statement, the State Department indicated that "the proposed sale
will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States
by enhancing the security of a NATO ally."
"Spain's fleet of
MQ-9A
aircraft
provides surveillance, intelligence and reconnaissance support that directly supports US and coalition operations around the world," the government explained.
Washington also indicated that the sale "
will improve Spain's ability to face current
and future
threats
by guaranteeing the operational readiness" of its Air Force and that "it will not alter the basic military balance in the region."
The new contract with
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems
is associated with the purchase by Spain of
four MQ-9As and three ground control stations
for these ships.
The Californian manufacturer delivered the first two drones in December 2019 and the other two in November of last year.
The drones are part of the
233 Squadron of the 23rd Wing of the Talavera la Real Air Base
, in Badajoz.
