It was last week that two large avalanches occurred in Stora Sjöfallet and that caused parts of Ritsemvägen to be closed.

The avalanches contained large amounts of water and rocks, so-called sludge avalanches, and on Monday morning, snow removal began.

- We have two drivers on site in an excavator and wheel loader.

Then we have a third person who scouts the mountains with binoculars if there should be more avalanches.

They have contact via radio, says Stefan Hannu, chairman of Ritsemvägen's community association.

50 meters wide - four meters high

When the morning's work started, it was found that one of the avalanches had left a lot of snow on the road, which is 50 meters wide, where the highest peak is four meters.

It was also cold during the night.

- It took a while to get started in earnest.

The rocks and the amounts of water form blocks so it was packed and hard snow this morning, says Hannu.

Expected to open to traffic later today

No one was injured but several people were stranded on the mountain after the avalanches, including Kerstin Pittja Omma.

Most flew home on Friday, but despite the heavy snow removal, traffic is expected to be released in the afternoon.

- If there is no major damage to the road bank so that it has been undermined, the road can open in a couple of hours, says Stefan Hannu at 2 p.m.

During Monday, they have worked hard with Ritsemvägen and the traffic will be released during the afternoon.
