Half a million people in India evacuated due to a new hurricane

Indian authorities have ordered the evacuation of nearly half a million people away from the path of a new hurricane heading towards the east of the country, just one week after a deadly storm hit the western coast.

This comes at a time India is suffering from a rise in infections with the Coronavirus, which has exhausted the health care system after leaving a total of more than 300,000 deaths in the country.

Experts say storms off the coast of India are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change, which is leading to a warming of ocean waters.

The Indian Meteorological Department said that Cyclone Yas formed in the Bay of Bengal and is expected to reach West Bengal and Odisha states on Wednesday.

The administration confirmed that the winds associated with the hurricane could reach a speed of 185 kilometers per hour, and classified it as a "very dangerous cyclone storm" before reaching land.

She added that waves up to four meters high "are likely to submerge low-lying coastal areas."
