The death toll from a cable car crash in Italy has risen to 14

Fourteen people were killed after a cable car fell in northern Italy on Sunday, rescue teams confirmed.

Thirteen people died at the scene of the accident, and two injured children were taken by helicopter to a hospital in Turin, and one of them died later.

No further details were revealed about the victims, and the mayor of Strasa told "Ray News 24" that there were children among the dead.



And the Public Prosecutor's Office in Verbania announced on Sunday evening that it had undertaken an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

It was not clear what caused the accident.  

The accident occurred on Sunday in the Italian region of Piedmont, west of Lake Maggiore.

This came just one day after the resumption of the use of the Italian cable car network, and it had been stopped for several months as part of officials' attempts to keep people at home to stop the spread of the Corona virus.

According to media reports, the accident occurred shortly before the cable car reached its stop.

The cable car system connects Stresa with Mount Mutaroni.
