In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, lava flow from an erupting volcanic eruption threatened Komasi, a population of 2 million.

After the eruption of the Niragongo volcano in Virunga National Park in the eastern part of the Democratic Congo around 6 pm on the 22nd local time, the lava from the volcano flowed down toward Komasi on the southern shore of Lake Kibu.

The lava flowed down overnight and stopped at a point hundreds of meters from the city border.

According to local residents, the lava flowed down to the airport in the eastern suburbs of the city, but fortunately it did not affect the airport facilities.

However, villages near the airport were damaged by lava, and thousands of Komas residents were evacuated when the lava headed for the city.

"According to the municipality that has been watching the situation, the flow of lava has weakened," said Patrick Muaya, a spokesman for the Democratic Congo government.

After the eruption of the volcanic eruption, electricity was cut off in most of Goma, and phone calls continued to be poor.

Known as one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, the eruption of Mount Niragongo is the first since January 17, 2002.

At that time, more than 250 people were killed in the eruption and 120,000 were displaced.
