Many experts believe that the real figures are arguably largely underestimated, especially as the epidemic has spread beyond major cities, into rural areas where hospitals are scarce and registers poorly kept. .

Across this vast nation, the devastating wave of Covid-19 has engulfed hospitals, resulting in a shortage of oxygen and essential medicines.

Crematoriums and cemeteries were also overwhelmed.

According to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO) presented on Friday, the pandemic has so far caused "about 6 to 8 million" direct and indirect deaths.
