The deaths have been marked by question marks since 21 February 2020 when a woman from Jönköping was found dead in her room in a holiday hotel in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

The day after the woman died, her husband, also from Jönköping, died in police custody, where he was taken to be questioned about his wife's death.

Relatives of the couple have asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for help in sorting out the course of events, Jönköpings-Posten has previously reported.

After two interpellation debates, Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S) has now raised the issue of the Swedes' death during a meeting with the Dominican Republic's ambassador in Stockholm.

Urgent handling

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs writes in an email to TT that the matter has been raised on several occasions, both in the Dominican Republic and with the country's ambassador to Sweden.

"The Foreign Minister has had a meeting with the newly appointed ambassador of the Dominican Republic in Sweden in connection with his accreditation, and was then able to emphasize the importance of the circumstances surrounding the deaths being thoroughly investigated," the Foreign Ministry writes via its press service.

"We will continue to monitor and address these cases. As the Foreign Minister was clear in the latest interpellation debate on this issue, we expect an urgent handling where all circumstances are investigated ", writes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
