- Hungary justified it by going into self-defense law (for Israel), said Foreign Minister Ann Linde after the meeting to Swedish journalists.

Ahead of the meeting, the German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas appealed for a ceasefire, followed by dialogue.

Promised German help

According to the news agency Reuters, Germany promises the equivalent of just over SEK 400 million in humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.

"Today I will push for a better humanitarian supply to Gaza," Maas said ahead of the extra-video conference.

At the same time, the German Foreign Minister condemns the rocket attacks from Gaza against Israel and emphasizes Israel's right to self-defense.

But the meeting struggled to get a united call for a ceasefire.

EU foreign policy representative Josep Borrell would, however, continue trying to get some kind of reaction, according to Ann Linde.

- What is happening now is that Josep Borrell has contacts with all delegations to see if they can still not come to a unanimous statement, we have not succeeded in that yet at the meeting, said Ann Linde (S).

What is perhaps most likely now, according to Linde, is that Josep Borrell himself may focus on making a chairman's statement that only he, as leader of the meeting, is formally behind.

Bigger differences

- I do not know if he manages to get it now, but I think there are a total of 26 countries that are behind getting an immediate stop to the violence.

But then there are bigger differences in how you look at the long-term solution than there was before, says Ann Linde.

She sees it as a failure for the Union not to succeed in getting a joint statement.

It reduces the EU's ability to act in any role in resolving the conflict.

Ann Linde claims that there is a great deal of agreement when it comes to condemning Hamas 'and other organizations' rocket fire on Israel, while at the same time Israel has an obvious right to self-defense.

But Israel must do its utmost to ensure that civilians are not harmed.

It is deeply worrying that two children on the Israeli side and up to 60 on the Palestinian side have been killed, Ann Linde emphasizes.
