A criminal investigation targets the Trump Organization

The New York State Attorney announced Tuesday that the "Trump Organization", a group owned by the family of former US President Donald Trump, is the target of a criminal investigation.

"We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation of the organization is no longer purely civilian in nature," said spokeswoman Leticia James.

"We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in criminal matters, along with the attorney general in Manhattan," she added.

The Trump Organization includes hundreds of companies linked to Donald Trump or his relatives, especially hotels, real estate companies and golf courses.

In 2018, Democratic Manhattan Attorney Cyrus Vance opened an investigation, initially focused on sums paid before the 2016 presidential election, to two presumed mistresses of the Republican billionaire, and was expanded to include information on tax and banking fraud and insurance companies.

The investigation is being conducted in secret before a large jury.

In February, Attorney Vance obtained data on Donald Trump's income in the last eight years as well as the revenues of the Trump Organization after a long court battle.

Trump, who left the White House in January, denies any transgressions, describing the investigation as "a continuation of the largest campaign of political persecution in the history of our country."
