More than 3,000 rockets have been fired at Israel by Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups in the past week, according to the BBC.

The fact that the death toll on the Israeli side is not higher is largely due to the country's air defense system - Iron Dome - about 90 percent of the rockets have been intercepted by missile defense systems, according to the Israeli military.

One of the world's most advanced defense systems

Iron Dome was created by the Israeli companies Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries, with financial support from the United States.

It is considered one of the world's most advanced defense systems, as the Iron Dome uses radar to identify and destroy incoming threats before they can cause damage.

- What is special about Iron Dome is that it has so many robots that it can stop saturation attacks, as you shoot many rockets at the same time, says Andreas Hörnedal who is research leader in the department of defense technology at FOI.

Detects when a projectile is fired

The system can immediately detect when a projectile is fired - and with the help of advanced algorithms and maps analyze where it is about to strike and assess whether it needs to be neutralized.

- Israel has a few population centers that they want to protect.

But it will be more difficult if you have a larger area to defend with a system like this, says Andreas Hörnedal.

A decade after the Iron Dome was put into operation, Israel now has ten so-called batteries deployed across the country, each with three to four firing units that can shoot 20 robots each.
