Eight people will be tried in Paris in September for having uttered anti-Semitic insults in December on social networks against a candidate for the Miss France 2021 contest, the Paris prosecutor's office said on Tuesday, confirming information from RTL.

Nine people - eight adults and one minor - were taken into police custody on Monday in the investigation opened on December 21 by the national anti-hate online pole, following the publication of anti-Semitic tweets after the election April Benayoum as first runner-up in the Miss France contest.

At the end of their custody, the eight adults, four men and four women aged 20 to 58, were summoned to be tried on September 22 for "public insults committed on account of the origin, ethnicity, race or religion ”.

These people are from Bouches-du-Rhône, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val d'Oise, Sarthe, Ain, Bas-Rhin and Rhône.

They were taken into custody in an operation coordinated by the Brigade for the Suppression of Crime Against the Person (BRDP), in conjunction with the local police units and gendarmerie brigades.

The procedure concerning the minor has for its part been transferred to the Poitiers prosecutor's office, said the Paris prosecutor's office.

During the designation of Miss France 2021, April Benayoum had revealed that her father was of Israeli origin.

His election as the first runner-up had sparked many anti-Semitic comments, especially on Twitter.

The government then summoned the social network to take “its responsibilities” and remove these messages.
