May 17, 2021 Covid has shown us how important it is to accelerate digital transformation so that everyone in the world can receive information, communications and stay connected. The pandemic has not only highlighted the essential role played by technologies in ensuring the continuity of the functioning of society, but has also highlighted the evident inequalities between and within countries in the digital field.

For this reason, the World Telecommunications Day that the UN celebrates today, on the date on which the International Telegraphic Union was created in 1865, is even more significant and wants to underline the urgent need to accelerate digital transformation and move forward to achieve goals set by the 2030 Agenda so as not to leave anyone behind.

There are many initiatives organized around the world on the occasion of this Day which aims to help raise public awareness of the economic and social opportunities for the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies in the economic and social fields, as well as on ways to bridge the digital divide. The hashtags launched by the International Communications Union for the day are: #Connect 2030 and #DigitalTransformation.
