Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), confirmed - in telephone conversations with the Sheikh of Al-Azhar Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb - the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and their continued protection of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy sites, praising Al-Azhar's support for Jerusalem and the Palestinian cause.

For its part, Hamas said in a statement that Haniyeh reviewed - during a call he made with the Sheikh of Al-Azhar on Sunday - what the Israeli occupation forces have done and are doing in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the crimes they are committing in the Gaza Strip against children, women and civilians.

In the conversation, Haniyeh emphasized the steadfastness of the Palestinian people, and that they would continue to protect the Al-Aqsa Mosque and holy sites.

He praised the position launched by the Sheikh of Al-Azhar and his support for the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and his support for the cause of Jerusalem, which is the central issue of the nation, according to the statement.

"Egypt and Al-Azhar Al-Sharif have always been a central depth of the nation, and (Al-Azhar) is the shield for Islam and the sanctities and sanctuaries for Muslims everywhere," the Hamas leader said, according to the statement.

He also praised the Egyptian stances to support the steadfastness of the Palestinian people, and Cairo’s role to stop the aggression and curb the occupation, open the crossing (Rafah land with Gaza), receive the wounded, and bring in aid, according to the statement.

To world leaders ...

The Sheikh of Al-Azhar sent a message to world leaders calling on them to intervene to stop the Israeli violations and "support the peaceful and oppressed Palestinian people in their legitimate cause in order to recover their right, their land and their sanctities."

Earlier, Dr. Al-Tayeb also wrote in a tweet criticizing the Israeli attacks, saying, "The world remains in a shameful silence towards the brutal Zionist terrorism and its shameful violations of the right of Al-Aqsa Mosque and our brothers and our sanctities in Arab Palestine."

The sheikh of Al-Azhar affirmed that "Palestine is a father to tyrants, no matter how long it takes, and its people will remain stationed on their land, honor and sanctities, defending the blessed Al-Aqsa, the first of the two qiblahs and the third of the Two Holy Sanctuaries."

Since April 13, the situation in the Palestinian territories has exploded as a result of brutal attacks committed by the Israeli police and settlers in occupied Jerusalem, the Al-Aqsa Mosque and its environs, and the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, following Israeli efforts to evacuate 12 Palestinian homes and hand them over to settlers.

After that, Israel launched an attack on the Gaza Strip, which led to the death and injury of hundreds, as the Ministry of Health in Gaza reported, on Monday morning, that the number of martyrs since the start of the aggression on the Strip reached 197, including 58 children and 34 women, and 1235 were wounded.
