Shanghai Xintiandi is divided into Beili featuring Shikumen architecture and Nanli based on modern architecture. The fashionable and prosperous "Magic City" and the solemn and solemn red landmark meet here.

On Xingye Road, the watershed between the two, there is a Shikumen building that has experienced hundreds of years of wind and rain—the site of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China.

In July 1921, the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held at 106 Wangzhi Road (now 76 Xingye Road).

Thirteen major representatives of the Communist Party of China, with an average age of 28, met with two representatives of the Communist International in the 18-square-meter living room in Shikumen, turning a page in Chinese history.

In order to greet the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, the site of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China will be temporarily closed to the outside world from November 17, 2020, and will be repaired. However, the entrance of the site is still full of tourists.

"The site of the First Congress is the birthplace of the party, and this year happens to be the 100th anniversary of the (the founding of the Communist Party of China), so take the children over to take a look, remembering history will cherish our current beautiful life." Audience Xu Haiying, April 13th He brought his son to the gate of the meeting place long ago, and the boy wore a red scarf on his chest.

Yang Tian, born in 1987, has been in the party for 11 and a half years. He just arrived in Shanghai on the evening of April 12 and visited the venue with his family the next morning.

"After watching the TV series "The Age of Awakening", I was very touched, and I came here to visit this time," she said.

During the "May 1st" holiday this year, a large square of the Memorial Hall of the Communist Party of China was opened on a trial basis. At peak times, it received more than 11,000 tourists a day.

In fact, in recent years, the number of visitors to the memorial hall has been growing rapidly.

According to Yang Yu, an associate researcher of the museum, from 2014 to 2016, the annual reception volume of the memorial was between 500,000 and 550,000, which rose to 830,000 in 2017, 1.42 million in 2018, and 1.46 million in 2019.

In addition, the audience at the Great Memorial Hall of the Communist Party of China is showing a younger trend.

"Contemporary young people are also eager to interpret the young people of a century ago, especially to understand what they are for and firm up their ideals and beliefs." Yang Yu said.

When visitors walk in here, they will find that from the tea set decoration on the conference table in the venue to the first Chinese translation of the "Communist Manifesto" in the exhibition hall, the history of the "Awakening Age" a hundred years ago is being presented with heart.

Since the original building of the venue was built in 1920, in order to restore the scene of the meeting in 1921, the venue will be slightly renovated every year. The old craftsmanship lacquer used for this exhibition and repair needs to go through 12 complicated processes.

The pink glass vases on the conference table in the living room also reflect the ingenuity of the repairers here.

According to Yang Yu, the vase was made in the 1950s. At that time, Chinese handicraft technology was difficult to make the glass appear pink, and it needed to be mixed with gold and arsenic trioxide. “The little bit of gold back then was specially approved by the State Council.”

The venue has undergone several exhibition changes before and after it was finalized in 1978. The details highlight the respect and restoration of history.

For example, it is understood that the portraits of Marx and Lenin were originally hung on the wall of the living room.

"Later someone pointed out that restoring the venue to this way was not in line with the historical background at the time." Yang Yu said, "Because the CCP Congress was held in secret, it is impossible to blatantly hang portraits of these people on the wall."

The first Chinese translation of the "Communist Manifesto" as the "Treasure of the Town Hall" in the memorial hall was donated by the relatives of Zhang Renya, an early member of the Communist Party of China.

When introducing this cultural relic to visitors, Yang Yu often focuses on Zhang Renya's story.

In 1927, Zhang Renya returned to his home in Ningbo, Zhejiang, and entrusted his father Zhang Jueqian to keep a batch of documents and books, including the Chinese translation of the Communist Manifesto translated by Chen Wangdao.

Zhang Jueqian pretended that his son had not returned for many years, and that he might have passed away. He built a joint burial tomb for Zhang Renya and his wife who died young, and hid the information in Zhang Renya's burial mound.

After the founding of New China, Zhang Jueqian did not wait for news from Zhang Renya, and only then asked his third son Zhang Jingmao to hand over these documents to the relevant departments in Shanghai.

"Zhang Renya's relatives have been searching for Zhang Renya's whereabouts. It was not until 2005 that he found his eulogy in the "Red China" newspaper, and they learned that he died of illness as early as 1932. The inheritance and perseverance of a family is a complete interpretation. The peasant children do not forget their original aspirations and keep their mission in mind." Yang Yu sighed.

As one of the guardians of the site of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China, Yang Yu hopes to let more people understand the era and people in the era a hundred years ago by telling the cultural relics and the stories behind them.

For the visitors who walked into this memorial hall, revisiting the original intentions of the founding of the Communist Party of China is giving people more power to move forward. Wang Qian from Handan, Hebei, made a special trip to the venue to take a video. "After returning to the work unit, I want to pass on the party's history to every party member and colleague. I think this is the basic duty of a party member." He said. (Finish)
