South Africa to vaccinate faster

The vaccination campaign in South Africa will accelerate from Monday.

Healthcare workers and people over 60 can then receive a vaccination with the Pfizer vaccine at 87 locations across the country.

With a new delivery, almost 1 million doses have been received.

By the end of June, there should be 4.5 million.

In addition, 2 million doses of the Janssen vaccine are expected, said Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

He expects the rate of vaccination to increase significantly in the course of this month.

South Africa started to vaccinate with a delay in mid-February, after authorities decided not to use the AstraZeneca vaccines that were used because they would be less effective against the South African virus variant.

Last month, the country temporarily stopped administering the Janssen vaccine due to rare side effects.

This week it will be decided whether it will resume.

In total, vaccines have been ordered for 46 million South Africans.

The virus has hit South Africa hardest on the continent.

To date, the country has vaccinated nearly half a million healthcare workers and recorded more than 55,000 corona-related deaths and more than 1.6 million infections.
