17 May 2021 A fire of vast proportions broke out last night in the basement in the Asclepios pavilion of the Policlinico di Bari, in correspondence with the emergency room.

The latter ward was immediately evacuated.

Patients admitted to the Covid ward were also transferred in containers outside the hospital.




The fire was extinguished but in the area of ​​the emergency room and the Asclepios pavilion there is still a lot of smoke and a strong smell of burning. According to what was known from people present on the spot, the flames affected the waste deposit (including plastic and treated hospital waste), which is located right in the basement of the emergency room, and were extinguished by the numerous fire brigade teams rushed to the spot. The brigade also suspended the electricity supply in the whole Asclepios pavilion for a few tens of minutes in order to work safely. Now the electricity has been reactivated and it seems that the situation is slowly returning to normal.
