Dresden (dpa / sn) - Sunday is not an option for Saxony's churches.

"The Sunday rest is not only a great good for Christians, but also for society as a whole," says the bishop of the Dresden-Meißen diocese, Heinrich Timmerevers.

The Protestant regional bishop Tobias Bilz also warns that Sunday should be kept from gradually opening up for things that traditionally “should be reserved for the days of the week”.

With an ecumenical Vespers on Sunday, the Christian churches in the Free State will remember its importance for the “spiritual elevation”, the celebration of the divine service and the possibility of rest and relaxation.

Bilz and Timmerevers celebrate the evening praise together in the Dresden Cathedral (4 p.m.).

Everyone regularly needs time for themselves, for “what deeply sustains their life,” says Timmerevers.

For Bilz, Sunday as a day of rest and reflection has an ideal value that cannot be overestimated.

Even without going to church, he is seen as an "important break in everyday life".

He slows down “the incessant acceleration of our pace of life” and reminds us that “what we do is not everything”.

The Roman Emperor Constantine made the "venerable Sunday" in 321 a general day of rest.

Only the rural population was allowed to pursue agriculture freely and unhindered, "since it often happens that there is no better day to sow grain or plant vines ..." Sunday is still a public holiday today.
