Hanover (dpa) - The newly elected President of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), Anna-Nicole Heinrich, advises the church to concentrate on its strengths, the work for God and people, in view of the decline in membership and the need to save.

In the diaconal and pastoral area, the church is doing a good job that is also visible on a broad basis, said Heinrich of the German press agency.

This also applies to child and youth work.

The church has already identified such areas that are important for the future.

“Because we will have to rebuild the church, we will get smaller, there is a clear financial framework.

We will actively shape this in our future processes. "

A week ago, the EKD Synod surprisingly elected the 25-year-old Regensburg philosophy student to the top office of the President, the chairman of the church parliament. "I am very confident that I can now play a role and help shape this courageous church that dares to do something," said Heinrich. "And I also believe that the last few months of the corona pandemic could shift priorities and give drive to certain topics."

The church must benefit for the future from the creativity demonstrated in the Corona crisis to reach people in new digital ways, said Heinrich.

«For our future processes of the church we have to use this disruption and - if everything starts up again now - not go back to program A.

We want to reflect exactly what positive things we take with us from the time, also in terms of offers and formats.

And what has perhaps also blessed its time, what was always there before and what seems less relevant after this time. "
