Schwerin / Berlin (dpa / mv) - The officers of the Federal Police identified significantly more crimes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2020 than a year earlier.

Last year there were 4,986 crimes, around 1,700 more than in 2019, according to a response from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to a request from the AfD member of the Bundestag Leif-Erik Holm, which is available to the German Press Agency.

The answer did not provide a list of the criminal offenses involved.

“The fact that the number of detected crimes rose by two thirds in 2020 shows very impressively how much more security regular border controls could bring.

Because we had these at times last year because of the corona pandemic, "said Holm.

This is clear evidence that border controls are not only possible, but also very effective.

There were no figures of its own in the Ministry's answer.

The number of executed arrest warrants by the federal police in the state, however, decreased.

In 2020 there were 260 arrest warrants, compared to 346 a year earlier. According to the answer, around 1,100 federal police officers are working in the northeast.

Officials reported that they worked around 50,000 hours of overtime last year, around 17,000 less than in 2019.
