The issue of free rent for new buildings is part of the 73-point program that the governing parties have developed together with the Center Party and the Liberals.

Today, the cost of building the house is the decisive part of the rent, but with the new proposal, the property owner will be able to directly negotiate with tenants about what the rent will be.

The proposal is under investigation and will be presented within a few weeks.

Make it attractive

The hope from C and L, who pushed the proposal, is that free rent for new buildings will address the housing shortage that prevails in three out of four Swedish municipalities.

The idea is that the proposal will make it more attractive for real estate companies to build new.

Stefan Ränk, CEO of the real estate company Einar Mattsson, shares that picture.

- If you see that "here we can get paid for rental apartments", then rental apartments are built.

That is what we already see today, he says in Agenda.

Extensive criticism

At the same time, far from everyone is in favor of free rents.

The proposal has been criticized by, among others, the Left Party and Minister of Housing Märta Stenevi (MP).

Among the loudest critics is also the Tenants' Association, which has collected over 120,000 signatures in protest against the proposal.

According to union president Marie Linder, free rent will only benefit those with the thickest wallets.
