Magstadt (dpa / lsw) - According to information from the industry, the demand for bicycles has exploded during the corona pandemic.

There was a real run on bicycles, e-bikes, spare parts and accessories, said dealers from Baden-Württemberg and the two-wheel industry association.

According to industry information, a total of more than five million bicycles were sold in Germany last year, an increase of almost 17 percent compared to the previous year.

The trend will continue unchecked this spring - so strong that retailers could run out of bicycles in the summer, it said.

"An enormous backlog has formed," says dealer Wolfgang Renner from Magstadt (Böblingen district).

When the pandemic hit Europe in March 2020, the coronavirus had long been raging in Asia and interrupted the supply chains where the heart of global bicycle production beats.

When they reopened after the first lockdown, bike shops in Germany were "almost overrun".

The managing director of Link Rad Quadrat, a large bicycle retailer in Gengenbach (Ortenaukreis), Peter Litterst, expects prices to rise in view of the strong demand.
