The hearing of the main suspect of a double murder in the Cévennes who surrendered to the gendarmes on Friday began, the Nîmes prosecutor said on Saturday, specifying that the man is speaking "consistently".

Valentin Marcone, 29, fled Tuesday in the Cévennes forest after killing his boss and one of his colleagues in the sawmill where he worked, in the village of Plantiers (Gard).

"Weakened and haggard", he surrendered without violence on Friday around 7.15 pm to a patrol of gendarmes while a team of the GIGN (elite units of the gendarmerie) combed the area, near the church of Saint- Marcel de Fontfouillouse, a few kilometers from the scene of the crime.

"I asked that he be immediately seen by a doctor who judged that his condition was compatible with a police custody", indicated the prosecutor of Nîmes Eric Maurel for whom the suspect "especially needed to eat and sleep ”.

When he surrendered, Valentin Marcone had no food on him. He was hungry and dehydrated, a police official said. “A first hearing, very summary, took place after his placement in police custody but we agreed to let him rest before questioning him again. His hearing therefore resumed this morning in the premises of the research section of the gendarmerie of Nîmes, ”added the prosecutor.

"He expresses himself in a completely coherent way", he added, refusing to deliver any other elements on the content of his testimony before the end of the police custody which will be prolonged until Sunday afternoon.

More than 350 gendarmes assisted by helicopters, drones and dogs, in particular Saint-Hubert known for their exceptional olfactory capacity, were mobilized to find the fugitive who was presented as dangerous and "likely to be carrying a weapon. handgun and a precision rifle ”.
