One of Europe's most wanted drug traffickers returns to Italy

Giuseppe Romeo, on the run since 2018, was arrested in Barcelona on March 11.
He returned to Rome escorted by Italian police on Friday May 14.
He is to serve a 20-year prison sentence.
The Calabrian is according to Italian investigators one of the most dangerous traffickers in the world.

In Calabrian dialect he has several nicknames: the madman, the dwarf… At 35, Giuseppe Romeo is a celebrity among the Mafiosi, a figure of the 'Ndrangheta, the Calabrian Mafia;
the most formidable of European criminal organizations.
Officially resident in Germany, Romeo actually shuttled between Northern Europe, Holland, Germany and Lombardy, passing according to investigators up to 40 kilos of cocaine per week from Holland to Milan.
For the police, it is an organizer of trafficking with relays in several countries and a financier of drug distribution in Europe.
A fish big enough for the Italian Minister of the Interior to publicly thank the police for their work.
Romeo had escaped a major crackdown against the Calabrian mafia in 2018. He was the subject of a European arrest warrant.
With the collaboration of the Reggio Calabria police, the Spanish Civil Guard arrested him in Catalonia two months ago.
He is now imprisoned in Italy where the courts sentenced him last November to 20 years of detention.
