It is an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the south of the country and which risks remaining invisible, warns the FAO and the WFP, the World Food Program.

Just over a million people are currently at levels of acute food insecurity, of which 14,000 have recently moved into phase 5, a “disaster” situation.

Within the integrated framework of the WFP food security classification, this is the highest phase, which involves “

very urgent protection of human lives

” and full assistance on the most basic needs (food, water, housing…).

Since the introduction of this methodology in 2016, this is the first time that people have been registered in this phase on the Big Island.

And the organization believes that urgent measures must be taken, otherwise the number of Malagasy people in disaster situations could double from October.

For Arduilo Mangoni, the deputy director of the WFP, it would take about 90 million dollars (or 15 million per month) to bring vital aid to the population.

“

What we have done since last fall is not enough,

” he believes, the rate of malnutrition has doubled in a few months, from 8% to 16% in the most affected districts.

The WFP index 5 concerns only three countries in the world, Yemen, South Sudan and Madagascar.

Today is #DayofFamilies

WFP in #Madagascar works to ensure that all families 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 have access to enough and nutritious #Food.

In southern Madagascar🇲🇬, where hundreds of thousands families are left without anything to eat, the ration provided by WFP is vital for them.
