Freiburg (AP) - Robert Lewandowski celebrated the setting of the Bundesliga goal record by Gerd Müller with emotional words.

"I have achieved a goal that once seemed impossible to imagine," tweeted the world footballer after FC Bayern's 2-2 draw at SC Freiburg on Saturday in English.

"I'm so incredibly proud to make history for @FCBayern and to play a role in creating the stories fans will tell their children."

He is following in the footsteps of “legends like Gerd Müller”.

The Polish international striker scored in the 26th minute with a penalty kick and equalized Bomber Müller's previous Bundesliga record with his 40th goal of the season.

This had also scored 40 goals for Bayern in the 1971/1972 season.

After his hit, Lewandowski presented a black T-shirt with Müller's likeness and the white inscription “4EVER GERD” under his jersey.

Bayern's players and coaching staff formed a trellis for him in front of the substitution bench on the sidelines and applauded.

Next Saturday against FC Augsburg Lewandowski has the chance to even outdo the 1974 world champion.
