The Ethiopian Election Commission announced, Saturday, May 15, the postponement of the legislative elections scheduled for June 5 due to multiple logistical difficulties, without being able to set a new date.

"The vote will not take place on June 5," said the president of the electoral commission, Birtukan Mideksa, adding that she could not provide a new date before having examined the proposals of the political parties.

She listed a plethora of logistical delays, such as finalizing voter registration, training election officials, printing and distributing ballots.

"It has turned out to be almost impossible to achieve all of this on the dates initially set," she said.

She added that the new date should take into account the rainy season, which runs from June to September.

The country of 110 million inhabitants was called to the polls to choose deputies at the national and regional level.

The deputies elect the Prime Minister, who is the head of government, as well as the president, an essentially symbolic role.
