German choreographer and dancer Raimund Hoghe, who worked as a playwright for choreographer Pina Bausch, has died at the age of 72, the accompanying artists and production house announced on Saturday.

The German artist, also filmmaker and author, died "on the night of Thursday to Friday", according to the Independence press release.

"His career as a dancer and choreographer began in 1992, in artistic collaboration with his partner Luca Giacomo Schulte", according to this press release.

"He choreographed + Meinwärts + in 1994, his first solo as a dancer, then, in 1997, he created + Chambre separated + and in 2000 + Another Dream +, a trilogy on the last century".

He has received several awards and was named 2019 Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters in France.

"In 2020 he received the German Dance Prize - the highest honor dance has to bestow in Germany," the statement said.

A former critic for the German weekly Die Zeit, he was a playwright to fellow choreographer Pina Bausch in the 1980s.

A little man with a hunchbacked or even broken body, the dancer knew how to take advantage of his singularity with strength and grace.

He was recently invited by the Montpellier Danse festival which celebrated its 40th anniversary.
