Vienna (dpa) - At almost 28 years of age, the oldest giraffe bull in Europe has been euthanized in Vienna's Schönbrunn Zoo.

Kimbar recently suffered from severe joint pain, which could no longer be relieved by medication, the zoo reported on Saturday.

“Giraffes, especially bulls, rarely live to be over 20 years old.

It was clear to all of us that the day of farewell could come at any time.

Nevertheless, we are extremely sad, ”said press spokeswoman Johanna Bukovsky.

He was lovingly cared for until the last day.

Since his teeth were already very worn, some of the fodder was soaked, the hay was steamed and the vegetables were chopped into small pieces.

He especially enjoyed being brushed on his neck, chest and stomach with a broom.

Kimbar was born in 1993 at Emmen Zoo in the Netherlands.

At the age of two he came to Schönbrunn as part of the European Endangered Species Program (EEP).
